Linux is a stable and virus free replacement for the Windows operating system. Originally created by a computer science student in Finland it has now grown to become an easy to use and practical system for both home and office. While it's not for everyone - for instance it won't run itunes - you can do almost everything you can do in Windows, including internet access, email, watching movies, playing MP3's, Office tasks and accounting. For just about every program in Windows there is a program that will run in Linux that is equivelant.

As an added bonus Linux is totally free to use as are all the programs you are likely to need.
